Fillastre, Guillaume

   prelate, scholar
   Born in La suze, Maine, Guillaume Fillastre was the dean of Reims and endeavored to end the western schism. He took part in the Council of Pisa (1409), was made a cardinal in 1411 by the Pisan pope John XXIII and, at the Council of Constance (1414-1418), upheld the sovereignty of a council over the pope. His intervention effectively brought an end to the schism and led to the election of Pope Martin v, who made him legate in France. He served there as intermediary for the peace between the Armagnacs and the Bourguignons. As a scholar, Guillaume Fillastre produced a translation of the Syntaxe mathématique (or Almageste) of Ptolemy and a map of Europe, the first to show Greenland.
